Do you know that when tropical cyclone are formed in the northern hemisphere of the equator the cyclonic wind blow is clock wise , while the cyclonic wind blow anti clock wise is the tropical cyclone are form in the southern hemisphere of the equator.

KOTA KINABALU: Strong tail wind from Typhoon Nesat wreaked havoc in Sabah's west coast, knocking down power and telecommunication lines, uprooted trees and blown off rooftops.

No one was injured when the storm lashed the state at 4am Tuesday but the catastrophe left a trail of destructions, affected some 15,000 people when electricity and telephone lines were cut off by fallen trees and billboards.

Residents in the coastal villages of Tanjung Aru, Putatan and Petagas were also rudely awakened early Tuesday when strong winds ripped off their homes zinc roofs. [Read More]

Heavy Storm Felt in Sabah...Typhoon Nesat...

 There was mild wind felt last night around 7pm in Sepanggar area, but we thought it was just  normal wind. as usual we mind our business. not knowing what is going to happen later.

Around 11pm, wind starts to intermittently picking up but still I thought is was just a normal wind. I went to sleep slightly after 12am. I was sound asleep until 6am. but my wife told me that there is thunder storm now since about 5am, can you imagine I was so sound asleep during this hour?

Anyway, checking my FB and then I found out that the storm was caused by typhoon Nesat that hit our neighboring country the Philippines.

Since Sabah location is right below the typhoon path, that is how Sabah got its name as Sabah Land Below The Wind, and in local language Sabah Negeri Di Bawah Bayu..

 During early morning storm one of the tree outside our office fall on one of the fence clearing up of  the falling tree is currently in progress. I talked to the contractor in charged of cleaning the falling tree, he said the storm started around 4.30am. a colleague of mine also mentioned that most the trees along the road towards Kuwasa also being up rooted due to heavy storm. also a colleagues of mine mentioned some of the roof at Kg Ganang area has been flown away.

Now if we look at the above satellite image, Sabah is some how hit by that typhoon path.

"At 4:00 a.m. today, Typhoon "PEDRING" was estimated based on radar, satellite and surface data at 40 km East of Casiguran, Aurora (16.4°N, 122.7°E) with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 19 kph."

About Sabah

Where is Sabah Located?

Sabah is the second largest state in Malaysia after the state of Sarawak with which it shares its borders on it south west region. Sabah also shares it borders with East Kalimantan of Indonesia in the south while the other cardinal directions face the South China Sea. The capital of the state of Sabah is Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton during British era, Sabah is also know as, negeri di bawah bayu which mean Sabah, land below the wind. This is due to its location where is under the typhoon prone region of Phillipines.

What is the Geographical Condition in Sabah?

Geographical structure in Sabah involved a mixture of mountainous regions, beaches and tropical rainforests. Towards the western side of Sabah are mostly mountainous with three of Malaysia’s highest mountains being a part of it. The Crocker range is the most famous of it, with mountains upto 4,000 meters of height know as the Mount Kinabalu, at 4,095 meters is the highest mountain in Malaysia and the fourth highest in the Malay Archipelago after Papua's Puncak Jaya, Puncak Trikora and Puncak Mandala. Mount Kinabalu is also the 20th tallest mountain in the world by topographic prominence. The tropical rainforests of Sabah include the Kinabalu National Park which was declared as a World Heritage Site in 2000 due to its ecological diversity.

Division of Sabah

Sabah is divided into five administrative divisions; namely: West Coast Division where K.K. the capital city of Sabah located, Interior Division, Kudat Division, Sandakan Division, Tawau Division and Labuan Division. In 1984, Labuan was declared as a federal territory.

KK the Capital City Of Sabah?

Kota Kinabalu is the capital city of Sabah formerly know as Jeselton during the British colonial rule. Today Kota Kinabalu has turned into  vibrant city.

Kota Kinbalu city is located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park lies on one side and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is nearby.

Kota Kinabalu is often known locally as K.K. within Malaysia and internationally. It is a major tourist destination and a popular gateway for travelers visiting Sabah and Borneo. Kinabalu National Park is located about 90 kilometres from the city traveling by road takes about 1hour30minute to 2 hours of drive. There are many tourist attractions in and around the city. Kota Kinabalu is also one of the major industrial and commercial centres of East Malaysia. These two factors combined making Kota Kinabalu as one of the fastest growing cities in Malaysia.
