The worst Disaster ever to hit the world..Part 2

Dear Readers,

As you all have read the Part 1 of my post on the world worst disaster compiled by David B Hall. and details of the disaster I found from wikipedia, explaining what was the disaster about, how or where is happened and the date it had occurred.

This is the Part 2 of the World Worst Disaster Information..

21)   Ireland, 1845 - 48
"Potato Famine" takes at least a million lives.
The people of Ireland expected a good potato crop in 1845. The weather had appeared to be favourable and in many senses, the farming community of Ireland expected a bumper harvest. However, when it came to digging up the potatoes, all they got was a black gooey mess. In fact, the expected bumper crop turned out to be a disaster. There was a 50% loss of potatoes in this year. The rural community had no way of countering this. Each family grew what they needed for that year and few had any to keep for times of trouble. In fact, the problem got worse. The crop of 1846 was all but a total failure and there was a very poor harvest in 1847. Three disastrous years in succession presented Ireland with huge problems.

22)   France, Germany, America, etc., 1870
approximately 500,000 lives lost as a result of smallpox.
The Franco-Prussian War triggered a smallpox pandemic of 1870–1875 that claimed 500,000 lives

23)   China, 1876 - 1879
The deadliest drought in recorded history was in China between 1876 and 1879. Rivers were dry, so most crops and livestock died. There was no food production in a 1-million km2 area of 9 provinces. The drought caused the death of an estimated nine million people.

24)   Java and Sumatra, 1883
Krakatoa, a small volcano on an uninhabited island between Sumatra and Java (Indonesia), erupted with such fury it could be heard inAustralia nearly 5,000 kilometers away. The tsunami that followed took about 50,000 lives.

25)   China, 1887
The worst flood in "modern history" happened in China in 1887. The Yellow River overflowed, causing the death of about 900,000people. (Some reports say it was a million that parished.)

26)   Japan, 1896
About 28,000 people lost their lives from a Tsunami
The 1896 Meiji-Sanriku earthquake was highly destructive, generating one of the most devastating tsunamis in Japanese history, destroying about 9,000 homes and causing at least 22,000 deaths.[1][2] This magnitude 7.2 event occurred at 19:32 (local time) on June 15, 1896. The magnitude of the tsunami (Mt = 8.2)[3] was much greater than expected for the estimated seismic magnitude and this earthquake has been regarded as being part of a distinct class of events, a tsunami earthquake.

27)   Caribbean, 1902
Martinique, a small French colony in the Caribbean, has a volcano "Mont Pelee" which unleashed its fury and wiped out the town of St. Pierre. Only one survivor - pictured on right: a prisoner in a basement cell. (There's a good chance he got his life right with God before that day was over!)  But there were actually two others who also survived. see their amazing stories  Around 30,000 people were killed.

28)   Italy, 1908
An earthquake of 7.2 magnitute and the tidal wave that resulted, destroyed several southernmost Italian cities and towns and approximately 123,000 people.
The 1908 Messina earthquake and tsunami took some 100,000–200,000 lives on December 28, 1908 in Sicily and Calabria, southern Italy. On December 28, 1908 from about 05:20 to 05:21 an earthquake of 7.2 on the moment magnitude scale occurred centered on the of city Messina, inSicily. Reggio Calabria on the Italian mainland also suffered heavy damage. The ground shook for some 30 to 40 seconds, and the destruction was felt within a 300 km radius. Moments after the earthquake, a 12 m tsunami struck nearby coasts causing even more devastation. 91% of structures in Messina were destroyed and some 70000 residents were killed.[2] Rescuers searched through the rubble for weeks, and whole families were still being pulled out alive days later, but thousands remained buried there.[3] Buildings in the area had not been constructed for earthquake resistance, having heavy roofs and vulnerable foundations.

29)   China, 1911
Yangtze River
 flood - approx: 100,000 deaths.

30)   Italy, 1915
Avezzano, Italy - 7.5 earthyquake takes nearly 30,000 lives.
The 1915 Avezzano earthquake or 1915 L'Aquila earthquake occurred on January 13[1]in southern Italy, near the city of L'Aquila. The epicenter was located in the town of Avezzanoin southern Italy. 30,000 direct fatalities resulted from the earthquake, destroying the epicentral area. The earthquake took place at around 8:00 local time affecting thousands of people throughout central and southern Italy; the shaking was even felt in Rome also.[2] The town ofAvezzano was literally toppled from the shaking and only one high-rise building survived.[3] 96 percent of its population was eliminated almost simultaneously, the worst casualty zone.

31)   World-wide, 1918 - 19
Influenza pandemic takes somewhere between 35 million and 75 million lives (some reports estimate around a hundred million, but those can't be confirmed) - at least 16 million people died in India alone. This is clearly the worst disaster - at least in the last thousand years.

32)   China, 1920 - 21
In the north China there was a drought that caused 20 million victims and took at least 500,00 lives.

33)   China, Gansu - 1920
Gansu
, China is hit with an earthquake measuring 8.6 and kills around 200,000 people.
1920 Haiyuan earthquake (Chinese: 海原大地震; pinyin: Hǎiyuán dà dìzhèn), was an earthquake that occurred on December 16, 1920. The epicenter was 36.50°N 105.70°E [2], in Haiyuan County, Ningxia Province, Republic of China. It was also called the 1920 Gansu earthquake [1] because Ningxia was a part of Gansu Province when the earthquake occurred.
The earthquake hit at local time 20:06:53 (GMT 12:06:53), reportedly 7.8 on the Richter magnitude scale, followed by a series of aftershocks for three years. Today's Chinese mediaclaim the earthquake as of magnitude 8.5, although the scale is not specified. It caused total destruction (XII - the maximum intensity on the Mercalli scale) in theLijunbu-Haiyuan-Ganyanchi area.

Total casualty was reported as 200,000 in a summary published by the United States Geological Survey (USGS),[1], 240,000 according to Ningxia Daily, a Chinese publication in the current administrative area.[2], and 235,502 according to the Catalog of Damaging Earthquakes in the World (Through 2008) maintained by the International Institute of Seismology and
34)   Japan, 1923
A third of Tokyo is destroyed and much of Yokohama in an 8.3 earthquake which between 140,000 and 200,000 people.
This earthquake devastated Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama, surrounding prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka, and caused widespread damage throughout the Kantō region.[3] The power and intensity was astonishing: it managed to move the 93-ton Great Buddha statue at Kamakura which was over 60 km away from the epicenter, sliding it forward almost two feet.[4][5]
Casualty estimates range from about 100,000 to 142,000 deaths, the latter figure including approximately 40,000 who went missing and were presumed dead. Damages from this natural disaster were the greatest sustained by Prewar Japan. In 1960, the government of Japan declared September 1, the anniversary of the quake, as an annual "Disaster Prevention Day."
According to the Japanese construction company Kajima Kobori Research's conclusive report of September 2004, there were 105,385 confirmed deaths in the 1923 quake.

35)   China, 1927
An earthquake 7.9 - hit Nanshan City and took about 200,000 people.

36)   China, 1931
A flood on the Changjiang River took at least 145,000 people (other estimates go over a million, but we have not confirmed that).

37)   China, 1932
Another earthquake, this one northwest Gansu Province, killed about 70,000 people.

38)   China, 1935
Another Yellow River flood "caused 27 counties inundated and 3.4 million victims".  How many actual lives were killed we don't know. If you have facts, let us hear from you.

39)   China, 1933
Another Changjiang River flood takes the lives of at least 140,000 people.

40)   Pakistan, 1935
About 30,000 lost their lives in a 7.5 earthquake.

The worst Disaster ever to hit the world..Part 1

Dear Readers,

For many thousand years the world has seen so many disaster be it caused by Mother Nature, Pandemic, plague, war and these disasters has caused so many loses in human lives, infrastructure loses, and the amount of monetary required to rebuild what was destroyed.

These loses has seen how the world has come together to help rescue victim of the aftermath, and rebuild what was lost.

As I search through the internet I come across a site compiled by David B. Hall some the the 66 most tragic and worst disaster ever to hit the earth.

Here are the list of 66 worst disaster ever recorded, the amount of loses maybe in accurate as such the lost maybe an estimated figures only.

01)        Syria, Aleppo - 1138
            Earthquake kills 230,000 people
The earth quake was located near the town of Aleppo in northern Syria on 11 October 1138. TheUnited States Geological Survey lists it as the third deadliest earthquake in history.[1] However, the figure of 230,000 dead is based on a historical conflation of this earthquake with earthquakes in November 1137 on the Jazira plain and the large seismic event of 30 September 1139 in the Azerbaijani city of Ganja. The first mention of a 230,000 death toll was by Ibn Taghribirdi in the fifteenth century. (resource : wikipedia)

02)        Japan, 1181
famine wipes out at least 100,000 people

03)        Netherlands, 1228
Estimate: 100,000 lives lost from the flooding after some dykes broke.

04)        Netherlands, 1287
The Zuider Zee flooded after a seawall callapsed. At least 50,000 people were killed in Holland and more than 500 in England as a result.

05)        Egypt and Syria, 1201
The deadliest earthquake in history hit the eastern Mediterranean in July 1201. Approximately 1.1 million
people were killed, mostly in Egypt and Syria. This makes it close to one of the ten worst natural
disasters in recorded history.

06)        China, 1290
Earthquake takes at least 100,000 people.
The 1290 Chihli earthquake occurred on 27 September with an epicenter near Ningcheng,Inner Mongolia. The earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 6.8 and a maximum felt intensity of IX (violent) on the mercalli
intensity scale. It is estimated that about 100,000 people were killed. The earthquake destroyed 480 storehouses and countless houses in Ningcheng.Changping,HejianRenqiu, XiongxianBaodingYixian and Baixiang were also            affected.[1] It severely damaged the Fengguo Temple in Yixian

07)        Most of Europe and beyond, 1347-1350
Approximately 25 million lost their lives through the "Black Death" - the bubonic plague. Between 25 and 33% of the entire population of Europe at that time, plus millions in Asia and North Africalost their lives.

08)        hina, 1556
arthquake in Shansi, China kills about 830,000
The 1556 Shaanxi earthquake (Chinese华县大地pinyinHuà xiàn dà dìzhèn) or Jiajing earthquake (Chinese嘉靖大地震pinyinjiājìng dà dìzhèn) was a catastrophic earthquake and is also the deadliest earthquake on record, killing approximately 830,000 people.[1] It occurred on the morning of 23 January1556 in Shaanxi, during the Ming Dynasty. More than 97 counties in the provinces of ShaanxiShanxiHenanGansuHebeiShandongHubeiHunan,Jiangsu and Anhui were affected.[2] An 840-kilometre (520 mi)-wide area was destroyed,[3] and in some counties 60% of the population was killed.[4] Most of the population in the area at the time lived in yaodongs, artificial caves in loesscliffs, many of which collapsed during the catastrophe with great loss of life.

09)        China, 1642
            Flooding takes about 300,000 lives.
Kaifeng, a prefecture-level city in eastern Henan province, People's Republic of China, located along the southern bank of the Yellow River, was flooded during a siege in 1642 by the Ming Dynasty army and by the peasant rebels led by Li Zicheng with water from the Yellow River.[1]Over 300,000 of the 378,000 residents of Kaifeng were killed by the flood and the ensuing peripheral disasters such as famine and plague.[2] The flood is sometimes referred to as a natural disaster due to the role of the Huang He river and is currently listed as the 7th deadliest natural disaster in history with a death toll of some 300,000.

10)        Spain, 1649
Plague takes about 80,000 lives in Seville.

11)        England, 1665
More than 100,000 lives were taken by the plagueLondon was worst hit.
The Great Plague (1665–1666) was a massive outbreak of disease in the Kingdom of England (modern day United Kingdom) that killed an estimated 100,000 people, 20% of London's population.[1] The disease is identified as bubonic plague, an infection by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, transmitted through a fleavector. It
had arrived in Europe 300 years previously as the Black Death and returned in fresh outbreaks every 10 years or so, of which the Great Plague of London was the last major outbreak.[2] The 1665-1666epidemic was on a far smaller scale than the earlier "Black Deathpandemic, a virulent outbreak of disease in Europe between 1347 and 1353.[3] The plague of 1665 was only remembered afterwards as the "great" plague because it was one of the last widespread outbreaks in England.

12)        Japan, 1730
Earthquake took the lives of some 137,000 people.

13)        India, 1737
First it was thought to be an earthquake, but more recent scientific studies have re classified it as a
typhoon - this tragedy killed some300,000 in Calcutta.

14)        Portugal, 1755
Over 100,000 lost their lives through "the Lisbon earthquake" and resulting tsunami.
The 1755 Lisbon earthquake, also known as the Great Lisbon Earthquake, was amegathrust earthquake that took place on Saturday 1 November 1755, at around 9:40 in the morning.[1] The earthquake was followed by fires and a tsunami, which caused near-total destruction of Lisbon in the Kingdom of Portugal, and adjoining areas. Seismologists today estimate the Lisbon earthquake had a magnitude in the range 8.5–9.0 on the moment magnitude scale,[2] with an epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean about 200 km (120 mi) west-southwest of Cape St. Vincent. Estimates place the death toll in Lisbon alone between 10,000 and 100,000 people,[3] making it one of the deadliest earthquakes in history.

15)        India, 1769
About ten million people lost their lives from a famine in Bengal
The Bengal famine of 1770 (Bengali: ৭৬-এর মন্বন্তরChhiattōrer monnōntór; lit The Famine of '76) was a catastrophic famine between 1769 and 1773 (1176 to 1180 in the Bengali calendar) that affected the lower Gangetic plain of India. The famine is estimated to have caused the deaths of 10 million people (one out of three, reducing the population to thirty million in Bengal, which included Bihar and parts of Orissa). The Bengali names derives from its origins in the Bengali calendaryear 1176. ("Chhiattōr"- "76"; "monnōntór"-    "famine" in Bengali).

16)        North America, 1775-82
            Smallpox takes around 130,000 lives.

17)        Iran, 1780
As many as 200,000 were killed in an earthquake near Tabriz.

18)        Iceland, 1783
a volcanic eruption (that included the largest basalt flow in recorded history) poisoned the island's pastures and caused the starvation of about 25% of the population - 30,000+.

The system erupted over an 8 month period during 1783-1784 from the Laki fissure and the adjoining Grímsvötn volcano, pouring out an estimated 14 km3 (3.4 cu mi) of basaltlava and clouds of poisonous hydrofluoric acid/sulfur-dioxide compounds that killed over 50% of Iceland's livestock population, leading to famine which killed approximately 25% of the population.[4]

The Laki eruption and its aftermath has been estimated to have killed over six million people[5] globally, making it the deadliest volcanic eruption in historical times. The drop in temperatures, due to the sulfuric dioxide gases spewed into the northern hemisphere, caused crop failures in Europe, droughts in India, and Japan's worst famine.

19)        Indonesia, 1815
Mount Tambora (volcano) on Sumbawa Island released about 50 cubic kilometers of magma over at least 500,000 square kilometers ofIndonesia and the Java Sea. That eruption and the resulting tsunami took at least 10,000 lives. But the famine and disease that followed took another 82,000 lives - total: over 90,000.

The 1815 eruption is rated 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, the only such eruption since the Lake Taupo
eruption in about 180 AD.[6] With an estimated ejecta volume of 160 cubic kilometers, Tambora's 1815 outburst was the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. The explosion was heard on Sumatra island (more than 2,000 km (1,200 mi) away). Heavy volcanic ash falls were observed as far away as Borneo,SulawesiJava and Maluku islands. Most deaths from the eruption were from starvation and disease, as the eruptive fallout ruined agricultural productivity in the local region. The death toll was at least 71,000 people (the most deadly eruption in recorded history), of whom 11,000–12,000 were killed directly by the eruption;[6] the often-cited figure of 92,000 people killed is believed to be overestimated.[7] The eruption created global climate anomalies that included the phenomenon known as "volcanic winter": 1816 became known as the "Year Without a Summer" because of the effect on North American and European weather. Agricultural crops failed and livestock died in much of the Northern Hemisphere, resulting in the worst famine of the 19th century.

20)        Japan, 1826
Tsunami kills about 27,000.

The AVENGERS 2012

The AVENGERS

File:TheAvengers2012Poster.jpg

Dear Readers,

Looks like 2012 will see the some or maybe all the Marvel created superheros joint forces to stop the evil from conquering the world.

How many of you remember in the movie The Hulk role stared by Edward Norton, where at the end after of the movie a snippet show Tony Stark the Iron Man met General Thaddeus Ross in a bar talking about a preposition that he wanted to form a team. at this time being I am sure one day Marvel will produce a movie that would combined all Marvel Superheroes to protect the world, but at the same time I am not sure what Tony Stark meant at the time when he wanted to form a team. as I mentioned earlier it is all still a guessing game, there must be a role where Iron Man and Hulk would joint force with other Marvel Comic Superheroes in one movie that would blast into the world wide cinema screen.

Then in May 6 2011 Marvel release another Superhero "THOR" staring Chris Hemsworth. Then later in July 22 2011 Marvel yet another Superheroes the First Avenger "Captain America" staring Chris Evan. All these releases are Marvel plan of the new Avengers Movie.

Back to the formation of Avengers, in Iron Man2 where Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and Natasha Romanoff (scarlett Johansen) helped healed Tony Stark from a slow poisoning death caused by the palladium core in the arc reactor that keeps Stark alive and powers the armor is slowly poisoning him, which he has failed to find a substitute. After defeating Ivan Vanko and his drones, in a debriefing, while news footage of the Hulk's rampage plays, Fury informs Stark that while Iron Man is a suitable candidate for the "Avengers Initiative", I think this refer to the Hulk movie where Tony Stark met General Thaddeus Ross about the formation of the Avengers Team...

Looks like the key to this formation is Nick Fury, lets see where are the sign that appears in the movie THOR, The Incredible Hulk and and Iron Man2 which tell us that a team is going to be formed recruited by the S.H.I.E.L.D which will be called the Avengers...

(The Incredible Hulk : Released June 13 2008)
In a post-credits scene, while General Ross is drinking in a bar he is approached by industrialist Tony Stark
(Robert Downey, Jr.), who reveals that a "team" is being formed.

(Iron Man2 : Released May 7 2010)
At a debriefing, while news footage of the Hulk's rampage plays, Fury informs Stark that while Iron Man is a
suitable candidate for the "Avengers Initiative", he himself is not.

(THOR : Release in US May 6 2011)
In a post-credits scene, Selvig has been taken to a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, where Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson
opens a briefcase and asks him to study a mysterious object, which Fury says may hold untold power. Loki,
invisible, whispers to Selvig to agree, which he does.

(Captain America "The First Avenger" : Release July 22 2011)
Rogers awakens in a 1940s-style hospital room. Deducing that something is wrong due to an anachronistic
radio broadcast, he flees outside into what is revealed to be present-day Times Square. There Nick Fury
(Samuel L. Jackson) informs him he has been "asleep" for nearly 70 years.

In a post-credits scene, Fury approaches Rogers, proposing a mission with worldwide ramifications.

Note: This is not a movie review, but only my personal opinion and for reading pleasure..

Directed by : Zack Snyder
Starring:
Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America:
Chris Hemsworth as Thor:
Tom Hiddleston as Loki:

Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff:
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye:

So now you see all the while Marvel Entertainment has told us that they are planning something big for all Marvel Superheroes Fans, and this is it. The Avengers are coming to the big screen.
